The Lady Monarchs Varsity Soccer team was back in action on Monday after the long Easter break facing CHSL rivals, Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes.
This game was in jeopardy of being cancelled as an April blizzard coated the pitch with snow about 20 minutes before the start. Fortunately the skies cleared and the snow melted allowing these two teams to play.
The Monarchs controlled the play early and stretched the field causing problems for the Laker defenders. Junior Gabriella Teems opened the scoring with a long shot that found the back of the net beating the Laker goaltender. Despite an initial save by Cabrini’s sophomore goalie, Chloe Roth, Lakes would answer with a goal of their own to tie the match 1-1. With time running down in the 1st half and the Monarchs continuing to press offensively, senior Madison Sukel would blast a shot into the Laker net after a beautiful pass by sophomore Ava Hazimeh. Cabrini went into halftime with a 2 to 1 lead.
The 2nd half would see more offensive pressure by the Monarchs resulting in numerous scoring opportunities. Cabrini would net their 3rd goal when senior Sydney DeBlander scored on a pass from junior Erin O’Neil. O’Neil would score a goal of her own after she was awarded a penalty kick after being taken down in the box.
Cabrini held off some late pressure by the Lakers to seal the victory 4 to 1 and improve to 3 and 0 in league play.
The Monarchs are back in action traveling to historic Fort Wayne for a 5:30 pm match against Cristo Rey on Thursday, April 12th.
