Coming off a win against Austin Catholic High School, the girls Varsity Soccer team traveled to face off against Catholic League rivals, Riverview Gabriel Richard, on Tuesday. Facing the elements on a rainy day along with playing on GR’s home field, the Monarchs had a point to prove early this season.
Cabrini’s game plan was to press the Pioneers and they did just that in the first 20 minutes of the match. The Monarchs had plenty of quality scoring chances in the press but failed to finish. Sophomore Hannah Cieglo broke the stalemate with a goal assisted by Senior Madison Sukel putting the Monarchs up 1 to 0. Senior goaltender, Maria Holder, made a great save on a possible Pioneer goal to keep Cabrini up by one but late in the first half Gabriel Richard would tie the contest with an unassisted goal and the half would end in a 1 to 1 tie.
Cabrini came out in the 2nd half and controlled the pitch and the ball. The Monarchs defensive unit was up to the task with excellent passing to the midfield and keeping the ball wide using all of the field. At around the 25 minute marker, Senior Madison Sukel made a great cut inside the box and received a perfect pass from Junior Gabriella Teems. Sukel buried the highlight reel shot past the GR tender in the upper corner. That goal would be the game winner for the Monarchs. With approximately one minute left in the game, Coach Karaouni would “park the bus” and compact his defensive unit which kept GR from mounting any offensive pressure.
The Monarchs head into the Easter break with a 2-1 victory of Riverview GR and a 2 win start to their season.
Cabrini returns to action with a home game against Our Lady of the Lakes on April 9th at 7 :00 pm under the lights!
