Riverview Gabriel Richard jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Tuesday night after the first two sets against CHSL rival Allen Park Cabrini.

The host Monarchs battled back, however, and ultimately came away with a 3-2 victory (22-25, 19-25, 25-13, 25-23, 15-4) over the Pioneers.

ardenFor Cabrini, Arden Fuchs finished with 18 kills, while Gabriel Martin had 15 kills and Sydney Molter came away with 14. The Monarchs improved to 5-1 in the CHSL AA while Gabriel Richard remains winless.

After going up 1-0 to start the match, Richard trailed Cabrini 14-11 in the second set.

The Pioneers came out strong, after a timeout, and quickly pulled ahead. They went on to win the set by six, with their final point coming courtesy of a kill by Sydney Kusiak.

For the night, Kusiak finished with 23 kills, while teammate Olivia Pellegrini had 12 and Sharmae Becraft had 10.

Cabrini grabbed a 4-0 lead in the third set, but Richard pulled to within one at 4-3, helped out by an ace from Emily Bener.

The Monarchs took the next four points and from there continued to build their lead. Cabrini was up 20-10 late and then closed it out ahead by a dozen. Bener had another ace for the Pioneers, while Monserrat Salinas also had one for Cabrini.

martinThe fourth set was close the entire way, but Cabrini picked up the points it needed late, highlighted by a kill from Fuchs to wrap up the two-point victory. For the Pioneers, Kusiak and Becraft both had big kills during the set and Alexa Cosgrove had an ace.

It was all Monarchs in the final set, as they grabbed an 8-4 lead and went on to take the set 15-4 and the match 3-2. Fuchs helped close it out with some strong serves, including back-to-back aces.

Also for Richard on Tuesday, Kusiak contributed 12 digs and two blocks and Bella Kandes finished with 26 digs. Pellegrini had four blocks and Becraft came away with three, while Bener added 28 assists and Cosgrove had 19.

Next up for Cabrini is a match at Wixom St. Catherine on Thursday. The Monarchs will close out league play with a game at Royal Oak Shrine on Oct. 10 and the CHSL playoffs are set to begin Oct. 18.
