But that didn’t change the mindset Monarch’s coach Cheryl Szczodrowski had her team bring into the match.
“I always tell my kids, ‘We’re never favored to win,’ ” Szczodrowski said. “We always have to prepare for an all-state team.”
Cabrini did what it had to on Tuesday night, sweeping Cornerstone, 25-8, 25-13 and 25-7 to advance to Thursday night’s regional final, where it will face familiar foe Madison Heights Bishop Foley. The Monarchs were never really challenged in the match. Senior Katie Pinkowski led the way with eight kills and six aces in the match. Junior Arden Fuchs and sophomore Gabby Martin added seven and six kills in the win.
“Our service performance was not very strong today,” the coach said. “We let too many tips drop, again, but that’s something we’ll continue to work on. Hopefully we’ll just get stronger as we go.”
The win sets up a regional final between two teams that have already played three times this season in Catholic League competition. Cabrini won both regular season matchups before Foley came away with a 3-2 victory in the Catholic League finals, winning the final set 15-13. The Ventures defeated Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett in straight sets in the night’s other semifinal.
“(Tonight) we really didn’t have much excitement on the court,” Szczodrowski said. “We will have it on Thursday (against Foley). We always have more excitement when we play better teams. We will have to bring a lot of energy.”
